How to Graduate Debt-Free:

Your Guide to SPPF Grants and Scholarships

Stacking the support that makes a paper engineering degree more affordable than you think

If cost is the thing standing between you and a paper engineering degree, take a breath. You are not the only one weighing it, and at the Syracuse Pulp & Paper Foundation, lowering that barrier is the whole point.

Since 1960, SPPF has worked alongside SUNY ESF to help students launch engineering careers without the weight of heavy debt. We do that through a layered system of grants and scholarships that most people do not realize exists until they start adding it up. So let’s add it up.

Start with the grants

SPPF grants reward the milestones you are already working toward, and they all require an application when you enroll or select your program or internship. You do not have to chase anything unusual. You just have to keep moving through your degree.

B.S. Paper Engineering Grant: $21,000. Complete your Bachelor of Science in Paper Engineering with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and you receive a $21,000 grant, paid directly to you, tax-free, after you graduate. It is the foundation’s way of making sure you start your career with momentum instead of a balance to pay off. To qualify, you need to submit an application when you enroll and a transcript for final payment.

Introduction to Paper Technology Grant: $5,000. Earn this for completing the foundational coursework that introduces the pulp, paper, and allied industries, roughly 10 to 11 credit hours. It is often one of the first grants students qualify for.

Minor completion grants: $5,000 to $7,500. Paper Engineering majors who complete the Management Minor earn $5,000 along with a real edge in business skills. Students in any ESF major who complete the Paper Science Minor are eligible for a $7,500 grant, whether they are exploring the industry or deepening their expertise.

Paper Industry Internship Grant: $2,000, up to twice. Complete an internship or co-op with a company in the paper or allied industries and earn $2,000. You can earn it again for a second experience, which means up to $4,000 for getting paid, real-world work that also builds your resume.

FE Exam Sponsorship: $175. When you are ready to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, SPPF covers the full cost for students in the B.S. Paper Engineering program. One less thing to budget for.

Scholarships that find you

Here is the part students tend to love: many SPPF scholarships do not require a separate application. They are awarded each semester to qualifying students based on things like academic performance, leadership, and financial need.

That includes awards such as the Grossman Family Foundation Scholarship and the George A. Oechsle Scholarship, both for students who show leadership and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, along with named awards that recognize everything from a major career change to a specific interest in recycled containerboard. While you focus on your coursework, this kind of support can come to you.

What it can add up to

Numbers tell the story better than we can. Picture a Paper Engineering major who moves through the program the way many students do:

  • $5,000 for completing the introductory paper technology coursework
  • $4,000 for two paid internships
  • $5,000 for finishing the Management Minor
  • $175 for the FE exam
  • $21,000 for earning the degree

That comes to more than $35,000 in grant support for a single student, before any sponsored or endowed scholarships are added on top. Your exact path and eligibility will vary, so the smartest move is to confirm the details with us. But the shape of it holds, and this is how a debt-free degree actually happens.

More than a number

Money matters, and it is not the only thing SPPF puts behind you. The same network that funds your degree also connects you to mentors, industry events, and the employers who hire from this program. That combination is a big reason SPPF graduates see 100% job placement, often with starting salaries above $80,000.

In other words, the support does not stop at graduation. It is what carries you into the career.
